A Fine Kettle of Fish: Mark Krebs’ New Collection

by 313 Design Market

Now on display at 313 Design Market as part of the DesignTO Festival

The 2025 DesignTO Festival marks the debut of Mark Krebs’ latest collection—an exploration of traditional kilim weaving inspired by the delicate patterns of fish scales. The concept was sparked during a visit to the Whitney Museum in New York, where Krebs encountered an ink print by Ruth Asawa. The artist had taken a fish from a local market, applied ink to its body, and pressed it onto paper, revealing a striking black-and-white impression. The simplicity and elegance of the piece left a lasting impression.

The new collection is available to purchase here.

This encounter led Mark Krebs to consider the intricate structure of fish scales and how their rhythmic patterns could be translated into woven textiles. After an extensive design process and multiple collaborations with partners in Northern India, the result is a collection of floor pillows and runners that capture the subtle sophistication of aquatic textures. The yarns, dyed using a multi-colored fiber technique, create a rich sense of depth and movement, mimicking the way light dances across fish scales. Balancing whimsy with refinement, the collection embodies the duality of fish—both playful and strikingly beautiful.
